Gumroad Review (2026): Sales Tax Handled, Payouts Held

by Welly Mulia - October 22, 2026

For a first digital product, Gumroad does the job: setup takes minutes, there is no monthly fee, and it collects sales tax for you. It keeps 10% plus $0.50 of each direct sale, with 2.9% plus $0.30 card processing on top, and 30% of sales from its Discover marketplace.

Payouts are the main complaint in a seller’s Gumroad review. Card sales pay out only after a $100 balance, a 7-day hold and a first-time risk review, though PayPal sales can land in a connected PayPal account at once. 46 of the 68 seller reviews among the 118 latest on Trustpilot describe a suspended account, a held payout or the payout minimum.

1 of the 3 review articles ranking on Google for this search was written in 2014. Another, dated 2024, now carries “(2026)” in its title. Both still sit on page 1, next to Gumroad’s own homepage.

None of the 3 mentions the $100 payout minimum or account suspensions, yet those 2 topics alone account for 28 of the 68 recent seller reviews on Trustpilot. They get a full section here.

The 5 sections below are the 5 jobs a seller needs Gumroad to do, in the order you meet them. Gumroad’s own help pages set the rules, and its sellers’ reviews show where those rules bite.

Key Takeaways

  • Day one is easy. No monthly fee, a hosted product page and file delivery mean a first sale can happen the same day.
  • The cut is bigger than 10%. Direct sales cost 10% plus $0.50, then 2.9% plus $0.30 card processing, so $10 leaves you $7.91.
  • Sales tax is its best job. Since January 1, 2025, Gumroad collects and pays sales tax, VAT and GST on your sales.
  • Card payouts are the real risk. Card sales wait behind a $100 minimum, a 7-day hold and a first-payout review.
  • Alternatives can pay every sale into your own account. Payhip (free plan, 5% a sale) and CartMango (free right now, from $10 a year once paid plans start in November, 0% a sale), which I run, both do.

Who writes Gumroad’s 1-star reviews

Sellers write most of Gumroad’s recent 1-star reviews on Trustpilot, and buyers write most of the rest. Gumroad, Inc. is a real San Francisco company, and its page shows 418 reviews, a 1.4 TrustScore and 83% of reviews at 1 star.

To split the 2 groups, I sorted the 118 most recent unique reviews on Gumroad’s Trustpilot page by who wrote each one and what went wrong. (2 of the latest 120 were posted twice.)

If you are still choosing where to sell your first product, the Online Selling Mistakes Challenge is a free 5-day email challenge on the top 5 selling mistakes digital product sellers make.

68 of the 118 reviews came from sellers and 36 from buyers, and 46 of the 68 seller reviews describe a suspended account, a held payout or the payout minimum.

The other 22 seller reviews split into fees (6), Discover reach (3), refund disputes (2), 8 one-off problems and 3 happy sellers.

The buyer complaints mostly rate a single seller, since Gumroad hosts many independent stores and each one ships its own product. A buyer who paid $21 twice for a download that never came is describing that seller’s setup as much as Gumroad’s.

Trustpilot marks Gumroad as a profile that has not invited reviews recently and has not replied to negative ones, so the people who write in are mostly people with a problem. Happy sellers exist, though. A seller wrote that their first payout came within 2 weeks of starting and that support answered fast. They are just rare on that page.

Getting a first product listed and paid for

Gumroad’s easiest job is the first one: you open an account, upload a file, set a price and share a product link, with no monthly fee and no website of your own. Buyers can pay by card, PayPal or a local method, depending on where they are.

Gumroad offers 3 kinds of upsell, shown after the buyer presses Pay: an extra product, a swap into a bundle, or an upgraded version. It also runs installment plans, discount codes, an affiliate program and a test-purchase tool, so you can check delivery without buying your own product.

Income School’s review, on page 1 for this search, calls missing PayPal support Gumroad’s “fatal flaw”. That review is dated January 10, 2014, and Gumroad’s checkout takes PayPal today.

Read Gumroad’s list of things you cannot sell before you upload anything. Among other things, it bans:

  • reselling products you did not create, PLR and MRR ebooks included
  • AI services, and services delivered outside Gumroad
  • credit repair products, physical products and dropshipping items
  • event tickets and anything sexually explicit

Gumroad’s suspension help page names breaking these rules as the first reason it suspends accounts. Check your product against the list on day one, not after your first $100.

A Redditor’s summary from an r/Entrepreneur thread fits this stage well. The top reply in a 2024 thread on Gumroad said the 10% “is high, but early on when you’re not making much sales, it actually a better deal compared to paying $29 for hosting and other web builder software”. For a first product with a handful of sales, that holds.

Working out what each Gumroad sale leaves you

Gumroad charges 10% plus $0.50 on each sale you bring in yourself, and its own fee article says that “does not include” card processing of 2.9% plus $0.30 or PayPal’s fees. Sales that come through Gumroad’s Discover marketplace cost a flat 30%, which does include processing.

The $0.50 is what hurts cheap products. On a $5 template, Gumroad and the card fee together take $1.45, which is 29% of the sale, even when you found the buyer yourself.

On a card sale, Gumroad’s direct route leaves $7.91 of a $10 sale and Discover leaves $7.00, while CartMango, which charges no cut, leaves $9.41 after the same card fee.

Sale priceGumroad fees, directYou keep, directYou keep, DiscoverYou keep, CartMango
$5$1.45$3.55$3.50$4.55
$10$2.09$7.91$7.00$9.41
$25$4.03$20.97$17.50$23.97
$50$7.25$42.75$35.00$48.25
$100$13.70$86.30$70.00$96.80

The direct and CartMango columns both use the 2.9% plus $0.30 card rate, which is Stripe’s standard US price on Stripe’s pricing page. CartMango adds a yearly plan fee instead of a cut, $10 to $30 a year once paid plans start in November.

Gumroad does lower the rate for big sellers. Once your paid sales in a calendar month reach $20,000, new direct sales that month cost 5% plus $0.50, and the count resets on the 1st. Refunds give back Gumroad’s own fee but not the processing part.

A ranking review still gets the fee wrong. A Medium review dated February 2024, now titled “(2026)”, sums the fee up as “10%flat” and adds a “$0.33” download fee that appears nowhere in Gumroad’s fee article. Our full Gumroad pricing breakdown walks through every fee from checkout to bank.

Finding buyers you did not bring yourself

Gumroad’s Discover marketplace is where Gumroad shows your product to people browsing its site, and new accounts cannot get in. Gumroad’s help page lists the entry rules: payout settings filled in, a balance of at least $100 from genuine sales, and a pass through the risk review, “which can take on average 3 weeks after you pass the $100 threshold.” Each product also needs 1 successful sale, a category and ratings switched on.

So Discover only comes into play after your first $100 of sales.

2 more details catch sellers out. Discover sales cost 30%, against roughly 13% plus $0.80 on a direct sale. And products listed on Discover are opted into Gumroad’s affiliate program automatically, which means another creator can earn a commission on your sale unless you switch it off. A Trustpilot seller wrote that you do not know it exists “until you get a sale that made less money than you expected”.

3 of the 68 recent seller reviews are about Discover: 2 say their products could not get listed, and 1 says it brought no views.

Handling sales tax, the job Gumroad does best

Gumroad collects and pays sales tax for you, and has since January 1, 2025, when it became the merchant of record on every sale. Its sales tax help page says it handles “all sales tax collection and remittance worldwide”, and the tax settings in your dashboard were switched off because you no longer manage them. For a seller with buyers in many countries this is a real saving.

You do not collect or pay VAT, GST or US sales tax on Gumroad sales yourself. If you already file sales tax returns for other income, Gumroad provides a reseller certificate so you can report your Gumroad sales as non-taxable resales.

The AI summary at the top of Google gets this backwards. It lists “Sales Tax Handling” as a con and says calculating and paying taxes “often falls heavily on the creator”, citing the same 2014 Income School review.

Google AI Overview for gumroad review listing sales tax as a con that falls on the creator
Google’s AI Overview for “gumroad review”. Read the Sales Tax Handling line, which comes from a 2014 review.

Payhip handles this job too. It collects EU and UK VAT, and since July 2026 it also collects US and Canadian sales tax, as our Payhip review covers. CartMango does not file tax for you, since you stay the seller of record, so on this job Gumroad and Payhip both do more. Our Gumroad vs Stripe comparison shows what that tax work is worth against a plain Stripe account.

Getting money from Gumroad to your bank, the job ranking reviews skip

Gumroad pays out card sales once a week, but only after 3 gates: a risk review before your first payout, a $100 minimum balance, and a 7-day hold on each sale. None of the 3 review articles on page 1 mentions the $100 minimum or account suspensions in its main text. Gumroad’s own help center sets out each gate.

  • The first-payout review. Gumroad reviews every account before paying it. Its help page says the review “can take 1-3 weeks”, and “Typically, this means 3-4 sales with a balance over US$100”. Payout days that pass during the review are skipped, and Gumroad says it does not email you about each one.
  • The $100 minimum. You need “a minimum balance of $100 USD to receive a payout”, and some countries have a higher local minimum. Sellers on Reddit and Trustpilot describe a $10 minimum through 2025, and complaints about the jump to $100 start in March 2026. 8 of the 68 recent seller reviews are about the minimum, 6 of them about that jump.
  • The 7-day hold. On weekly, monthly and quarterly payouts, each sale sits at least 7 days in your Gumroad balance before it can go out.
Gumroad help center payout schedule showing the $100 minimum balance and the 7-day holding period
Gumroad’s own payout schedule. The first line is the $100 minimum, the last paragraph the 7-day hold.

After that, bank transfers take 2 to 7 business days depending on your country. Where Gumroad cannot pay a local bank, it pays by PayPal, with a 2% payout fee.

PayPal sales are the exception to all 3 gates. If you connect your own PayPal to Gumroad’s checkout, Gumroad’s PayPal help page says PayPal sales “arrive immediately in your PayPal”, with Gumroad’s fee already taken out. It works in countries where PayPal operates, except Algeria, Brazil, Egypt, India, Israel, Japan, Micronesia, Morocco and Türkiye. You then handle PayPal disputes yourself, and card sales still go through the Gumroad balance.

The faster routes for card sales are narrow. Instant payouts skip the hold and start from $1, at a 3% fee, but only for US creators with at least 1 completed payout and 60 days of processing with Gumroad. Daily payouts are also US-only and need 4 earlier payouts.

Connecting your own Stripe account, so card sales land there at the time of sale, is closed to new users “except for users from Brazil.”

The bigger risk is suspension. Gumroad’s suspension help page says a reviewed, verified account is “safe from suspension” with 4 exceptions: a very high chargeback rate, refunding everything it ever sold, breaking the terms, or a payment partner refusing to work with it.

The same page warns that a suspended account’s “balance may be refunded” to buyers, depending on the rule broken. 20 of the 68 recent seller reviews describe a suspension. 12 of them say money was stuck in the account when it happened, and 2 say it came the day before a payout.

Some are disputed. A Reddit seller in the same r/Entrepreneur thread wrote that Gumroad called their product PLR, while they had “the whole Canva with time stamps to show it was created from scratch.” From outside, nobody can tell who is right in a single case.

Support is where reports split. Gumroad’s own page says 97.7% of people hear back within an hour and promises a reply within 24 hours. Several seller reviews describe automated replies instead, and a seller in the same r/Entrepreneur thread, who earned $6K on Gumroad in a year, wrote that support “used to reply to creator support issues within 24 hours” before going quiet on a pre-order question.

3 habits lower the risk if you stay:

  1. Check every product against the banned list before publishing.
  2. Never buy your own product to test it. Gumroad warns that payment processors treat that as fraud, and it offers a test-purchase feature instead.
  3. Download your customer list regularly from the payouts or sales CSV, so a suspension does not also cost you your buyers.

Gumroad, Payhip and CartMango, side by side

Gumroad and Payhip both collect sales tax and run a marketplace, Payhip and CartMango pay every sale straight into your own account, and CartMango takes 0% a sale on every plan but leaves tax with you.

Should you sell on Gumroad?

Sell on Gumroad if you want a first product live this week, you would rather never think about sales tax, and your sales are small enough that a percentage costs less than a monthly tool. That is a real group of sellers, and Gumroad serves it well. My read: Gumroad is a fair price for a first product and an expensive one for a growing business.

The math turns as sales grow. Say you sell 25 products at $20 a month. At that level, Gumroad’s own fee comes to $62.50 a month, or $750 a year. The same sales on Payhip’s free plan cost $300 a year in fees, and on CartMango $10 to $30 a year in plan fees once paid plans start in November. All 3 figures leave out card processing, which every option pays.

Skip Gumroad, or plan your exit early, if:

  • you sell PLR, resell rights, AI services or anything on the banned list
  • you need sales money in your bank within days to run the business
  • you live where Gumroad cannot pay a local bank and PayPal cannot receive money
  • you sell memberships and might move later, since recurring payments do not follow you off Gumroad
  • your buyers come from your own audience, so Discover’s reach is worth little to you

If any of these fit you, our list of Gumroad alternatives compares 7 options.

Gumroad review FAQ

Is Gumroad safe to purchase from?

Yes for the payment itself, which runs through Gumroad’s processors. The product comes from an independent seller, though. Of the 36 buyer reviews in the recent Trustpilot set, 10 say the product never arrived and 9 call it poor or misleading. Check the seller’s own site or social accounts before buying, and contact the seller first if something goes wrong. Our guide on whether Gumroad is safe covers both sides.

Is Gumroad real or fake?

Gumroad is real. Gumroad, Inc. is a San Francisco company that handles payments for independent creators and pays out to local bank accounts in most countries, or by PayPal where it cannot. Its 1.4 TrustScore comes mostly from sellers with payout or suspension problems and buyers unhappy with a single seller’s product, and Trustpilot notes that Gumroad has not invited reviews recently.

How much does it cost to use Gumroad?

Gumroad has no monthly fee. It takes 10% plus $0.50 per direct sale, with card processing of 2.9% plus $0.30 on top, and 30% per Discover marketplace sale, processing included. Above $20,000 in paid sales in a month, direct sales drop to 5% plus $0.50. PayPal payouts cost 2% and US instant payouts 3%.

Which is better, Gumroad or Etsy?

Etsy, if your product sells through people searching a marketplace. Gumroad, if you bring your own buyers. Etsy is built around its own search, and its fees and payments policy lists $0.20 per listing plus a 6.5% transaction fee, then payment processing. Gumroad’s Discover marketplace only opens after $100 in sales and a risk review, so it never brings a new seller’s very first buyer.

How long does Gumroad take to pay you?

A first payout waits for Gumroad’s account review, which takes 1 to 3 weeks and usually needs 3 to 4 sales and a balance over $100. After that, payouts go out weekly for sales at least 7 days old, then take 2 to 7 business days to reach a bank. US sellers can pay 3% for instant payouts after 1 completed payout and 60 days. Sales through a connected PayPal account arrive at once.

Keeping card sales out of Gumroad’s balance

Gumroad’s payout rules decide how long card sales sit in a balance you do not control: 7 days at the least, longer until you reach $100, and longer again during a review.

CartMango, which I run, sends every payment straight to your own Stripe or PayPal account and takes 0% a sale. It is free right now, with paid plans from $10 a year starting in November. Sales tax stays your job and there is no marketplace, the 2 places where Gumroad does more for you.
